According  to  Longman  Contemporary  English  Dictionary,  “diction”  means “choice  and  use  of  words  and  phrases  to  express  meaning,  especially  in  literature” Then  “diction”  in  translation  means  choosing  the  appropriate  words and  phrases  in  the  target  language  to  express  the  source  text.  In  Shaanxi  PSSI,  the problem of poor diction is common to seen and mainly due to unqualified translators. 

Example : 

Chinese:  该文物是唐太宗于贞观六年诏令而建。 

English: It was sculptured by the order of Emperor Li Shimin in the sixth year of his reign 

Suggested  version:  It  was  sculptured  under  the  order  of  Emperor  Li  Shimin  in the sixth year of his reign .

Actually,  the  sculpture  was  not  built  by  an  order.  Instead  it  is  built  under  an order. The poor choice of preposition is also an expression of confused logic resulted from misunderstanding of the original text.

4.2Grammatical Problems 

Good grammar ensures that the text to be correctly comprehended and easy and enjoyable  to  read.  Some  grammatical  problems  in   tourist translation  may  lead  to misunderstanding  or  even  failures  in  communication.  Since  the  skopos  of  C-E translation  of  PSSI  is  communication,  such  problems  should  be  highlighted  and corrected. Due to these linguistic problems, the readers may not comprehend the messages correctly and read easily, so the functions and skopos of the PSSI cannot be achieved. This  kind  of  problems  is  relatively  easy  to  be  found  and  corrected. Therefore,  great  importance  should  be  attached  to  translation  quality  and  most importantly, translators’ quality. 

4.3Pragmatic Problems 

According  to  Nord,  pragmatic  translation  problems  originated  from  pragmatic divergences  between  source  text  and  target  text  (1997).  That  means  readers  of different  languages  have  different  background  knowledge,  expectations  and  needs  of the texts. If the translator fails to attain the balance between the source text and target text on these factors, pragmatic translation problems would occur.  

Among the studies of C-E tourism translation the author has reviewed, most of the  pragmatic  translation  problems  are  analyzed  from  the  approach  of  cultural  terms, word-for-word translation, or Chinglish. The author will not repeat them here, but give a  new  perspective  of  PSSI  information  deletion  and  addition.  Since  the  function  of PSSI  is  to  cater  to  international  visitors,  something  which  seems  to  be  important  to Chinese  readers  but  meaningless  to  international  readers  should  be  deleted,  but  the information international visitors expect but we lack in Chinese should be added. 

4.4 Deletion of Information

Some information that seems inevitable for Chinese readers could be totally redundant and unconvincing for international visitor. If translated, it contributes nothing but confuses the international visitor. Such information should be deleted during the process of translation.

Example :

陕西历史博物馆将始终坚持走中国特色社会主义发展道路，解放思想，开阔进取...

English: The museum will keep promoting the development and prosperity of socialist culture, emancipating the minds, and work hard creative.

4.6Cultural Translation Problems

Due to different culture backgrounds, thinking patterns, and aesthetics values,Chinese and English PSSI both have their own features. Lack of consideration for these divergences in translation would lead to cultural translation failures, and thus communication failures. Cultural translation problems of Scenic Spots' Introduction   are mainly reflected in three aspects: cultural terms, quotations, and flowery words translation problems.

5.A Practical Analysis of the C-E Translation of  Scenic Spots Introduction Texts

The key theory Skopos Theory of functional ist approaches is recommended by many scholars to deal with the difficulties in the translation of tourism literature.

5.1Practical strategies applied

In the light of the tourist-oriented principle and the task of promoting Chinese culture, some practical strategies are put forward to bring the effect of the translated version into full play.The task of translators of tourism literature is to make China’s beautiful landscapes and unique cultural traditions known to foreigners and to attract more and more foreigners to come to China,which is the “ skopos’ or “ purpose’ of the translation of tourism literature in light of “ skopos rule’ . The former is to realize the informative function and the latter is to realize the vocative function. So according to “ skopos rule’ , both the content and the form of the original article are subordinate to the informative and vocative functions that the target text is intended to achieve. The translators of tourism literature should adopt corresponding strategies to achieve the success in offering precise as well as comprehensible information and motivating the target readers to take the real visiting action.
